Rusty Gunter
Chief Defender
Rusty Gunter first joined LPDO as a panel attorney in 2012, representing indigent clients across a broad spectrum of cases, from misdemeanors to first-degree felonies. Over time, he distinguished himself as one of LPDO’s leading defenders, earning a reputation for skillful advocacy, sound judgment, and a deep command of criminal defense. His practice ultimately evolved toward high-profile and complex matters requiring exceptional legal knowledge, extensive courtroom experience, and the ability to navigate the most demanding aspects of indigent defense.
After 21 years of practicing criminal defense, Rusty replaced Philip Wischkaemper as Chief Defender in 2022. He utilizes his experiential knowledge to advise and monitor attorneys to ensure the best possible representation for Lubbock County's indigent clients.
Rusty is married with two dogs and supports the Red Raider football team as a Texas Tech alum.
